Maserati 98 offers peek into Alfieri concept's design 98
Lancia has been on the decline for decades. But those lingering fans of the marque will be disheartened to learn of what Sergio Marchionne plans to do with it next. Speaking with Italian newspaper La Repubblica , Marchionne indicated that the Lancia brand will be stripped down to one model, and even that will only be sold in Italy itself. If put into action, the step would be just the latest in the long decline of a storied marque. Founded way back in 1906, Lancia gave us such timeless 98 treasures as the Flavia, Fulvia, Stratos and rally-bred Delta, and stood alongside the likes of Alfa Romeo , Maserati and Ferrari 98 as one of the great Italian auto marques. But it wasn't long after it joined those brands under the Fiat Group umbrella in 1969 before it began struggling to find its place. These days it sells the Ypsilon supermini, the Delta hatchback and a series of rebadged Chrysler models, 98 serving as that brand's proxy in Europe (and even then, not in the UK). With the current 98 Delta on the market since 2008 – now six years ago, if you can believe it – and sales languishing, the Delta is expected to be axed, leaving the Ypsilon (above) as Lancia's only unique model. And with the Fiat and Chrysler groups merging into one, the Chrysler brand itself could take another stab at the European market. Just how long Lancia will last as a brand for Italy exclusively remains to be seen, but it wouldn't be hard to imagine the Ypsilon living out the remainder of its lifecycle as the last new Lancia ever to roam any road anywhere.
I would be really sad to see the death of Lancia. Currently driving a Chrysler Delta (2012) in the UK I have re-branded it Lancia 98 and it attracts much attention, positive that is. I just wonder whether Alfa should have been sports 98 cars only, soft tops, coupe, nothing bigger than a two plus two, Lancia more Italian Mercedes Benz - quality, sports with space, Fiat small City cars, with Abarth as a sports option. But Sergio Marchionne seems to be taking the route of making Alfa premium 'Made in Italy' only brand - aligning to the desirability of Ferrari but in the main market, and I guess Lancia cannot compete in this strategy or space. It can't go small that is Fiat and he does not want to dilute the success of the new Chrysler 200. he could sell Lancia, but I am not sure who to? I cant see a European manufacturing wanting it? The fairest customer would be Fuji Heavy Industries, (owners of Subaru) or maybe Mazda? 98 Or perhaps Yamaha, who are making a small City Car with Gordon Murray Design technology 98 . But can he sell to someone to re-build the brand to compete with Alfa of Fiat. No I sorry to say that unless someone else has another idea the final death of Lancia will be announced in May... Have alook at the Fulvietta concept from 2003(?) i believe ... THAT's what they should be doing ... and ALSO a new STRATOS .... the role of the 'new' Maserati 98 is also intruding quite heavily on what the high-end Lancia's could have been ... but I would say that a slightly smaller 98 'luxury' saloon than the Ghibli (with same pizazz engines) could also be a hit with Lancia 98 badge (instead of a big Alfa Romeo)... i.e. the Segment 98 E Alfa will be a Lancia instead. the same way that VW can maintain VW, Skoda, SEAT, Audi, Porsche, Lamborghini & Bugatti, Fiat could find enough differentiators to build on Lancias legacy strengths of elegance, sportiness, innovative 98 engineering, integral/all wheel drive, turbo engines...it would have been the perfect antidote to Audi while Alfa could have chased BMW. Turning Lancia into a fashion and comfort brand was a lethal injection that it never recovered from...a deliberate misdirection by Alfa 'fans' within the Fiat group...and these Alfa people, sadly didn't do a very good job with Alfa either!
