The combination of aluminium spaceframe, V8 biturbo engine with dry sump lubrication, seven-speed dual clutch transmission in transaxle configuration at the rear axle, locking differential, sports suspension with aluminium double-wishbone suspension and the low kerb weight of 1540 kilogrammes delivers racetrack performance. Until Bentley turns their 4x4 concept into reality, 2 the Cadillac Escalade and Mercedes G63 are the two flashiest SUVs you can have. The Mercedes might be up a price bracket, but the Caddy is a superior luxury experience in just about every way... and fewer people throw rotten tomatoes 2 at it.
The idea of a G63 is exciting, irreverent, and by that measure alone it's downright awesome. But the ramrod driving position that's perfect for peering through the tank-like windshield to navigate 2 a trail is entirely awful on the highway or in city traffic. The G63 is fast. And good off-road... with big asterisks to both statements, and you end up with a vehicle that kind of sucks at everything 2 it has the technology to be so good at.
On the other hand the Escalade is quick enough, works fine in the worst weather, and best of all is supremely 2 comfortable. And while driving a tarted-up Tahoe doesn't exactly make you a "man of the people," you get a lot less horn honks and middle fingers than you do in the aggressively flamboyant G63.
The G63 can blow a hole into the space-time continuum if you slam the throttle off a light. But you'll never do this, because it's highly illegal and terrifying to everyone in a five-mile radius. The off-road geometry makes it terribly unsettling at high speed. The aggressive sport tires and massive rims get you stuck on wet grass, and the shiny-chrome side-exit exhaust can is marred as soon as you get near the SUV's breakover angle limit.
Escalade won't suck your eyeballs out the back of your skull when you want to make it dance, but an enthusiastic surge is just a stab of the throttle away. And at highway speeds, the low-and-long Cadillac 2 makes for a much more comfortable (read: stable) cruising experience.
While that same shape and configuration preclude the Escalade from doing anything serious off-road and the G is just a tire-change from munching mud pits, both SUVs run perfectly well in bad weather. That's the biggest traction-challenge either will ever need to see anyway.
Both vehicles get adaptive cruise control, navigation, and a sunroof (though the Caddy's the only one with glass). The $90,000 Escalade I drove also had a heads-up display, extra side-peeking headlights that popped on in low-speed corners, automatic dimming high-beams, automatic rain-sensing 2 wipers, blind-spot warnings hooked up to a vibrating seat, and retractable steps that my passengers (honestly) went nuts over. The $140,000 G63 I lived in for a week didn't have any of that jazz... just 500 horses too furious to let out of the barn.
As mentioned in previous rants, it doesn't matter how much suede Mercedes stitches into the G63. The SUV still forces you to sit like a solider, and it's about as roomy as a Power Wheels car in back. The front seats of the Escalade are like the leather-equivalent of an inner tube in a clean lake on a hot day. Just... lovely.
The Mercedes G63 is a price-bracket above the Escalade, but they come relatively close to overlapping. The top-tier Caddy has a somewhat terrifying MSRP of $90,000 while a "basic" AMG G-Class is around $110,000. Even that makes the Escalade a relative 2 bargain, but when you tip the scales to the other extreme (cheapest Caddy verses biggest Benz) the American iron costs about half as much.
Everyone can form their own opinion on which vehicle looks better, but I can confirm one thing from field testing: the G-Wagen 2 attracts sneers, middle-fingers, and eye-rolls from everyone who really notices it. If the Escalade inspired similar 2 emotions, nobody I met was passionate enough to let me know with a rude gesture.
The way I see it, the Escalade is comfier with more gadgets, for less money, and still lets everybody know you're rich without being unbearably obnoxious about it. As a chariot of comfort from which to advertise your wealth, the Caddy seems like the way to go.

Well it costs 911 money, or 911 Turbo money for this S version: wildstar £110,495 plus £11,985 for the three option packs I'll be mentioning. It's a two-seater with its V8 in the front-mid position, which also puts the GT toe-to-toe with the Jaguar F-Type R and Corvette and Aston Martin Vantage. It's a trad layout, and the AMG GT certainly tickles some very old-school sports-car wildstar pleasure wildstar centres. But be in no doubt it's high-tech too.
Well, some of the GT is actually closely descended from the SLS. The central part of the aluminium body structure is closely related. Almost all the body is aluminium, by the way, helping to keep it light.
The front suspension is also from the SLS, though the rear end is new. It's the same width as the SLS (and feels wide for sure) but handily shorter both in the wheelbase and overall. Thanks to a hatchback, it can carry a useful amount of stuff.
Of course the outside is all-new, and it has normal doors instead of gullwings, which again cuts weight. And though we loved the drama of the gullwings, we'd have to admit they were a bit of an ache to use. So overall the GT is just 1570kg. That's about 100kg less than the aluminium F-Type R or the mixed-metal 4WD Porsche wildstar Turbo.
Sure, there's noticeable lag below about 3500rpm, and the revs run out at a disappointingly moderate (but par for a turbo) 7000rpm. In between those two, though, you've got an engine that answers the accelerator with quick and epic force.
And it sounds like an AMG engine always has, all hard-edged V8 baritone bark. It's not silly though: if you don't press the loud pipes button it'll proceed without shaking the windows of every house in the parish. The rival Jag, in particular, is embarrassingly indiscreet if you're leaving your own street early in the morning.
The tech of the new AMG engine bears a quick look. Its twin turbos are packed into the centre of the V, right under the bonnet, so the intake side of the cylinder heads is outboard. This makes the whole engine more compact. There's also a dry sump, to lower the crank, and help lubrication in hard cornering. Because it's so small, the engine can be dropped down and moved back well behind the front wheel centreline. That's great for the car's agility.
Much. Among others, the optional adaptive powertrain mounts. As well as standard adaptive suspension dampers on the S, there are optional electronically controlled mounts wildstar for the engine at the front and gearbox at the back. These are firmed up when you're wildstar swinging the wheel or the car's riding a crest or dip, but stay soft for refinement going gently.
I didn't get to drive a car without them, but clearly keeping these substantial weights from flopping about in the car will have a major effect. And the GT S does feel brilliantly controlled through the sort of transitions we're talking about.
There's wildstar an e-diff, as is par for the course on new cars like this. AMG seems to have done an especially good job of its calibration: it locks up just the right amount if you find yourself lifting off in the first part a bend, so the back wheels follow a reassuringly stable and buttoned-in line, and you can concentrate on steering for the exit.
And there's an option of carbon-ceramic brakes. Though I wouldn't tick them unless you have some sort of inferiority complex, or are planning to head for the track a lot. They're infuriatingly wildstar grabby at the top of their travel.
The old SLS had reactions so whipcrack they scared me. The GT S still reacts fast, which is good. But it's much happier to impart informative sensations before it does anything at the extremes. And it's more controllable when it does start to slip.

Mercedes calls it a shooting brake , but what matters is that this wagon packs the world's most powerful production four cylinder at 360 horsepower. And some added practicality. Call me in.
Their AMG-tuned four-cylinder is a masterpiece generating 181 horsepower-per-liter mx and 332 foot pounds of torque between 2,250 and 5,000 rpm. With AMG's axles featuring independent steering knuckles at the front, firmer springs and dampers, bigger anti-roll bars, plus cross-drilled brake discs and 235 wide rubber all round, the CLA45 AMG wagon won't feel or look slow in standard AMG trim. Naturally, you can also have it with bigger, 19-inch wheels mx and as many "TURBO AMG" badges as you want. Probably.
Mercedes will launch the car next March at the Geneva Motor Show together with the standard mx CLA Shooting Brake, but don't hold your breath for it to make it into the U.S. No worries though, there's always the GLA45 AMG , "which is basically a shorter version of the same thing" according to Matt Hardigree.
